Kathak is a classical dance form that originated in northern India over 2000 years ago. The word "kathak" is derived from the Sanskrit word "Kathakar" which means "story teller". This narrative dance form is characterized by fast footwork (tatkar), spins (chakkar) and an intricate interplay of rhythm. There are three schools of teaching Kathak called gharanas; which include Lucknow, Banaras, and Jaipur.
